In 1998 was the peak at about 9,000rp to the AUD. For one day it hit 16,000Rp to the American. You could buy a large Bintang for about 20cents yet there was no rush of tourists to Bali due to the political crises of the time.
I remember having to go to Australia at this time and I kept reminding my wife how much everything was in Rupiah, which did not impress her one little bit and eventually demanded I stop converting things back into Rupiah.
On the way back to Bali my daughter bought a packet of life savers at the airport in Perth. That same day I sat down to a meal in a middle class restaurant in Denpasar and it was cheaper than the packet of lollies.
