The Tjampuhan Hotel has lots of "character". In the 1920s accomodation for guests of the King of Ubud. In the 1930s an artists' colony. Now a peaceful and very picturesque traditional style hotel built into the side of a thickly vegetated gorge.
Comfortable rooms, ask for aircon [you'll need it in December]. Two pools. Huge breakfast, as much as you want to eat, in a beautifully situated restaurant overlooking the gorge. Interesting spa on site. About 10 minute walk into town centre [or free shuttle if you're in a hurry!]. Close to Antonio Blanco art gallery and a restored heritage suspension bridge dating from the Dutch colonial era.
Don't get a room on the top level as you can get some road noise. My favourite is room River 3, closest to the small pool, but screened by vegetation and quite private.
Lots of websites on this hotel.
Being young, female, Asian American and travelling alone is not a problem in Bali. You'll have a fascinating time and will be planning your next visit well before this holiday is over.
