I went at the end of September, and it was definately cheaper to buy it duty free in Australia and take it with you. I found that the prices at Duty free in Bali were in US dollars and a bit more expensive than what you would pay in Australia. I got two 1 L bottles of Johnny Walker Black Label for $80 aussie, and brought back into Australia both bottles (didn't drink too much Johhny in Bali) plus 6 bintangs and didn't get questioned, declared it to customs and they just waived us through. The only thing is if you get stopped by customs in bali you will have to pay a "duty" to get it into the country, usually between $10 & $20 aud
