originated in 1939, long before computers, in a BBC radio show called ITMA [It's That Man Again]. The "man" was English comedian Tommy Handley. His show introduced a long line of memorable characters, catch phrases and abbreviations. The abbreviations were a running send-up of military style terminology. Possibly the only one which has survived is TTFN.
