Hi Basinboy,
There are a couple of ways that you can do it. You should be able to get a flight for under £550 (will take a bit of looking). This is likely to be with Air Malaysia/Garuda, with a change in Kuala Lumpur. What time of year do you think they would be travelling? Good webistes to look at for cheap flights are lastminute.com, majortravel.co.uk, cheapflights.co.uk, possibly expedia.co.uk. If you look down the forum a bit DavidUK and others were talking about cheap flights with Singapore Airlines too. I have also been told that it is worth ringing Garuda in London directly to see what price they can give you. Flights will almost certainly be out of London Heathrow.
I personally wouldn't say that a traditional package (ie one already made up by a travel agent) is the cheapest way to go. However, companies like ebookers and travel4less can offer really good deals (cheaper than just the flight) if you ring them and ask them to put together a flight + hotel deal for you. This is the way we have always done it. The flight itself should work out about £100 cheaper this way. I know that ebookers should be able to book most hotels for you. You must take at least a minumim of (x) number of nights in a hotel (1-5 usually, depending on the package they are offering at the time). This year they orgainised a three week trip for us with a two night stop over in Singapore both ways (inc. hotel) and two weeks accommodation in Bali (Kuta Seaview), flying with British Airways/Australian Airlines for just under £900 p/p.
Good luck, and feel free to ask anything else if I can help. Hope they make it out there!
