Don't know if this will be any help but I'm in the same situation. 3 bags of clothing donations that were originally to be packed in striped bags but since all this has happened I've gone to my local op shop and purchased 2 suitcases that will be padlocked shut. Hand luggage only isn't an option for me with 2 young kids.
I think as long as your bags are locked all will be OK. Our backpacks are so full there won't be any room for anyone to plant anything lol!
Also interested in the security tape . Seems like a good option aswell.
