I have spent a lot of time trying to find the most cost effective way of taking my family from the UK on a 3-week multi-stop holiday in the region over Xmas and New Year. The best deal I managed to get on flights to the region was to fly from UK to Singapore. I then wanted to use Singapore as a hub for other flights to other destinations (Borneo and Bali) but found it far cheaper to use Kuala Lumpur. The flights from KL to Bali (using Air Asia) were a fraction of the cost of those from Singapore.
One tip – if you are flying from Singapore to KL and back, book the trip as two one-way flights rather than a return booking as surprisingly it works out 15% cheaper (using MAS).
