Only advice I can give is the earlier you check onto a flight the better your chances of not being charged excess baggage. Airlines do an "aircraft trim" before they leave to make certain they have enough fuel and that cargo and baggage is weight distributed correctly in the aircraft. So I guess logically if you are the last one checked in and everyone else in front of you was 10kg over, the airline isn't going to be too pleased about reworking its figures. 15 years ago it was all done by hand....guess its all computers now.

Unaccompanied baggage used to be charged at a rate per kg, but with terrorism I can well imagine it being a thing of the past.
