The x-ray machines which scan your hand luggage at the airports are safe for films as fast as ISO-1600, which , by the way, I am sure you are not using. Of course, these machines, like any machines, must be checked periodically to ascertain that they are functioning according to the manufacturers' specs. I would guess (I hope) that they would be, if nothing else, for the safety of the operators (but mistakes do happen).

I was part of the team of scientists who invented these "parcel-inspection x-ray machines," in 1969. The film "problem," was, after personnel safety, one of our worry, . Our first design was "film-safe," and since that time, huge advancements have been made in the technology.

However, I don't understand why you would think there is a difference between exposed and unexposed film, and that the films are safer in your handbag than in your checked luggage, both being x-rayed, using similar machines.
