Tenganan is near Candi Dasa and is easy to visit. Visitors are made welcome and shown around. Although it is still basically run on traditional lines, there are now some modern conveniences in evidence, such as motorbikes, mobile phones, electricity and TVs.
I have a friend who is a man of the village. I commented to him on the motorbikes and mobiles and he explained that the traditional farming cannot provide work for all the young people, so they have to seek employment elsewhere. They need motorbikes to get to work and mobiles to keep in touch. Sounds reasonable!
My friend Komang works in a restaurant in Candi Dasa and we went into Tenganan on the back of his and his mate's motorbikes. He takes his duties seriously and is a good guide. His mother is a traditional weaver of the single and double ikat material.
If you would like to contact him, he is at Catra New Beach Restaurant.

The website is in Dutch, which is the nationality of the owner. If you click on Klik hier you get a useful map of Candi Dasa, showing the restaurant and the Tenganan turnoff.
