In 1928 a congress of nationists decreed that bahasa Indonesia should be the national language and thus help to unite Indonesian Archipelago. Most parts of Indonesia have their own language, even the island of Java has several. The Balinese language is very complex having 3 levels, low for people of low caste talking normally, middle for people of high caste talking to each other and high for a person of lower caste talking to a person of higher caste. Many old people cannot speak bahasa Indonesia and in the whole of Indonesia only about 80% can understand bahasa Indonesia. Thankfully most Balinese in the tourist area can understand English.
