It's more fun to turn on the local TV stations and watch Indonesian Idol or a number of spinoff progams, some of which involve young wannabe singers/performers, whilst others involve wannabe models, etc. They all have the Idol concept of elimination of one per week, with judges making commments about the contestants as it goes along, though they refer to them as the jury in Indonesia.
Why is it more fun? Actually, these shows are hilarious. Unlike in Australia where the elimination is strung out till near the end of any particular episode and then you find out who it is, have a quick look at their competition history and off they go, in Indonesia, in the elimination shows, you find out about half-way through the show!! The rest of the hour-long show comprises the eliminated contestant tearfully farewelling the remaining contestants, who are usually crying their eyes out as well, and farewelling the judges(jury) and the teachers, trainers, etc. Of course throughout this there are many shots of tearful family and friends in the audience.
In case you think I am exaggerating, watch them and you'll find out. And in case you think I am being a bit cross-culturally unaware, I point out that I have watched these shows many times in the company of a Balinese friend, and he was laughing about it as much as I was.
Actually, would be interested to hear from other Forumites who may have come across these shows, and to hear what they say about them.
