If I haven't stayed at a place before and don't know what to expect, I don't turn up with my luggage looking like I've got to get accomodation straight away, because that gives the hotel people an advantage. I tell them that I may be in that area in a few days time and if I am, what's the best deal they can offer me. That way, not only do you get a better price, but you also get to check out the rooms and choose the one which suits you best. I'm not into screwing them for a ridiculously cheap price. "Good for you, good for me" suits me fine.
