I sometimes put locks on. Lasat trip I put a plastic clip tag from QANTAS. When I was looking for my bag I kept ignoring one (going around the carosel) as it didn't have the tag. After a while I looked at it and it was mine. Minus the tag.
After the incident with the Aussie girl I think that could have been me. I didn't thnik mush about it. Thought maybe it fell off (my hubby put it on and thought maybe he didn't clip it closed).
I will always use locks now or at least the combination on those that have them. Better safe than sorry. Customs would only cut your bag open if they were sure there was something in it. Even then I don't think they normally cut them open. I think they would just X-ray it beforehand and give it to you as you could say they put it in there if they opened it.
My opinion anyway. I think the zip ties are a great idea but as someone said, you need a knife to cut them off at the other end.
