Hi Mic,
I now live in Waikiki, but I was in the North West in the 1960s and we all called it black top up there [as I recall}. I first went to Dampier when it was a work camp. No Karratha, no Wickham, no South Hedland, not much anything. No bridges and not much black top. It was a great event when the black top went through, ie a couple of isolated communities got a so-called "all-weather" connecting road.
Come to think of it, I don't suppose we hear the term around the South West, but we're not short of black top around here are we? [Don't anyone tell me about the lack of black top in the Wheat Belt, I've worked there too.]
Maybe just a bit of regional Australiana, now fallen into disuse.
Nice talking with you Mic and I get a lot out of your website.
Oh BTW, I was in Lipah just over 4 years ago when the [new improved] black top came in from the South on the coast road. It was well received, just like in the North West all those years ago.
