You are asked at Australian Customs as you are departing Australia, if you are carrying more than $10,000 AU so I expect that it the limit.
We take cash too and fortunately always been well under the limit! Travellers cheques are a pain, as you usually have to pay to buy them, then lose some in the rate to convert them to Rp and also produce your passport to prove your identity (photocopy is permissable by some money changers).
You can cashout at an ATM, with costs around $5 per withdrawal, so make larger transactions, eg 1 or 2 million (by selecting the other button).
AU $ are changed to Rp everywhere that money can be changed, as is almost all currencies.
