Yes I know another one but...hey, he deserves a mention.
Wayan is based outside the Tjampuhan Hotel in Ubud, but will go anywhere to collect, drop off. His daily rate started at 200,000 - we usually got him for less, but then often gave him more for a good day out or for a longer day than usual.
He is keen to show you "his" Bali. But not overly so. His english is good but his American is better - he has some American friends who have taught him some of the more useful terms - "Chill out dupe" being his and our favourite. "holly molly" generally described the traffic around Dempasar. I was often concerned that we were mucking him around with changing plans and meeting times but "chill out dupe was his response - You are in Bail - everyday is a holiday, was another acute observation. He considers Kuta to be Hollywood - cheap and nasty and will happily take you to see the "arts and culture" of Bali. Wayan is always smiling and makes any trip a pleasure - and if he can't find the place you want he will not muck around - he will ask people for directions and phone (our phone) to get the location sorted. And all this on only a fraction of what we pay him per day - his boss owns the car / van and takes about 75% of the days taking. No problem with that arrangement, but bear that in mind.
We would contact him on his mobile +62 081 338 791 474 either by voice or more usually by texting him meeting times etc. He was always on time or a little early - kept us on our toes.
He also has email - wayantagel@hotmail.com which he regularly checks but we used to phone him.
Let him know what you want to see and leave the rest up to him.
He has a lovely wife (Putri) - child number 3 is imminant, and two gorgeous kids , boy(Satria) and girl(Teari). Satria is 4 and can count to 10 in English and knows quite a bit more, thanks to Dad. We had dinner with them one Saturday night - and met the whole family at their place - the highlight of the trip.
Wayan's dad works on the family farm and provides all the food - and coffee. Wayan and his cousin(?) provides the rest. They live in a village 15kms from Ubud - in the real Bali style, I suppose. We are working on how we can best provide a bit extra for the whole family. The pending birth is looking like being a caesarian, so money will be an issue. Will keep you posted.
Once you get to know these beautiful people you don't want to let them go, eh.
respect,
Simon
