What my brother in law...who is the "conductor" of our village gamelan had to say,....they are made in Java, and most all there, are made in central to eastern Java. Depending on the instrument, it may be cast, or it may also be forged. The techniques used today are still tradional, i.e. gongs are forged, and then spun to "clean them" and refine them.
Balinese gamelan instuments are most noted for their furniture...the mountings. Check this out with a Yahoo search, or better yet, visit the archives here, or your library.
