Interesting way to start your first trip to Bali, with a ride to Nusa Dua, followed the next day with a trip to Legian.
Yes, we avoid the school holidays too, for all the reasons you metioned.
I also think that it is a rare hotel/resort that sells good food for a reasonable price. Rule of thumb, is to always visit the many restaurants in the streets.
