I'd still do the Hong Kong stop over - just the smell, neon lights and atmosphere are awesome alone (even if you dont buy anything). I always feel like I am in some strange film set walking through the Hong Kong streets - yehhhhhh sounds good do it...
Java??? not so sure - I havent been so its not from Personal experience - but from what I understand the Javanese are not as nice as the balinese.
