A year ago I was in Candi Dasa and met a woman from California who was living there. Andrea was well known and very well liked and everyone knew she was from the US. Obviously not a problem, at least in the Candi Dasa area.
Compared to most Balinese people, all the tourists [except other Indonesians] are regarded as well off, not just the Americans. It's the normal way to ask a high price for things, they expect you to try and bargain them down. Just get the feel of things before you start making major purchases.
