I went to a Bowling Club last week and 2 guys in their mid 20's walked in. The lady at the desk asked them to take their hat off. One remarked that he didn't know this was a RSL. She said it wasn't. He said "so why do we take our hat off if we are not honouring the Queen ???. She said it was the clubs dress rules. I couldn't help myself I said " actually it's just plain manners". He shrugged and walked off.
I assumed everyone grew up with this common courtesy. I know in schools, children are always told to take their hats off indoors.

I would like to know the origin also. I have a book on superstitions and where they originated from. Interesting reading.
