The Hotel Tjampuhan in Ubud is a magic place. Check it out on the net. I've stayed there a few times and will be back in August. I've always booked in Australia, but I would think you could negotiate in person.
Don't just turn up with your luggage in a taxi, go a few days before and tell them you're looking ahead.
When you're settled in Ubud, take a trip up to Lovina. Lots to see on the way. Have a look at a few places, pick one you like and negotiate. Last year this time, things were very quiet in Lovina and plenty of bargains to be found. Don't know about this year, but don't be too hard with the bargaining. They've had a hard time and deserve a bit of consideration.
