I am also travelling alone, from California, first time to Bali, and arriving on Aug. 11th, I just booked at the Green Garden for my first couple of nights in Kuta, check out Mic's website for hotel references, it is pretty thorough....The Green Garden looked good for me, nice pics, central to the beach, markets and nightlife...
