Emery board, spare prescription glasses if you have them, sunblock (is expensive there), couple of nappy pins (great for securing sarongs), antiseptic cream, waterproof plasters, ear plugs (for on plane), your house key (for when you get home), contact book with family details, passport and credit card etc details, your favourite coffee/tea (for making a cuppa in your room). Before we leave I always pack a mini bag with small ziplock bags containing antiseptic wipes, toilet paper, latex gloves, some panadiene, a couple of sticking plasters and a little bottle of insect spray and that goes on day trips with us in Bali. Once there I add a mini talcum powder which is nice for freshening up on hot days (wary of taking packs of white powder through customs!). I also pack a few metres of strong string or twine that can be an impromptu clothes line, or tie around a suitcase that is bulging at the seams at home time, as a precaution. If you are sensitive to some soaps and shampoos it pays to take your own.
