On my first trip to Bali, last year, I saw a lady beggar with a baby, in front of the bounty ship. The baby was crying and my first instinct was to reach for my purse, but my dad stopped me. He had noticed something I hadn't. The "beggar" was adorned with what appeared to be gold jewellery and had an impeccably made up face, with a nice dress on under her tatty old sarung. We watched her for a little while and after she had collected from a few people, she walked to the road and was driven away in a brand new 4 wheel drive!
I couldn't believe it and felt very angry for the real battlers, who mostly offer something in return for being helped out.
