Have a look at the Tjampuhan Hotel. It's in a really beautiful setting just a few minutes interesting walk from the town centre.
Ask for an Agung room [fan cooled]. I don't know what they charge when you just turn up at the reception, but it shouldn't be more than US$45, particularly if you sweet-talk them. And you should get a buffet breakfast included. It may help to use the name Rex [from Australia] as an intro. I've stayed there several times and will be back in August.
Make sure you get a room a bit down the gorge, because the rooms at the top get the road noise, maybe trucks at night. Rooms "River 1, 2 or 3" are nice.
Walking into town, go over the old suspension bridge, past Murni's Warung and up the quiet little hill parallel to the main road.
