Interesting post. At two in the morning, this last Nyepi day, I was still up, and having a good time with my Balinese family. I don't recal the thunderstorms you mention, and I think I would if they happened, as they would have been a marvelous replacement for the ogoh ogoh, and the bombs, that were banned, I would recall.
Last Nyepi eve in Ubud was a very dull night. No ogoh ogoh, no bombs, no storms, and not even minor fire works.
Are you sure you were in Ubud?
