A warung is a very small establishment where you can buy food, drinks, cigarettes, petrol and a few staples. Sometimes it will be in a small building, but often it's just a table with a lady behind it and a bench in front to sit on. Some warung are specialist, but many sell little daily necessities for people living nearby, ie people can walk to them and get what they need, a bit like a corner shop. People buy what they need between market days.
A shop, "toko" will be a grander affair with glass windows, a proper counter and so on.
Specialist warung may sell certain food, for example the warung in the bale near the corner of Jalan Raya and Monkey Forest Rd in Ubud is famous for its roast pork (babi guling).
Since I am now a genuine Bali antique, I can remember the time when there was just one warung at Kuta beach, where Jalan Pantai met the sand. I remember driving around Bali at night before electricity was available in the countryside, smelling wonderful smells of food and flowers (and sometimes some not-so-wonderful smells, let's not go there) and the only light in all the landscape was a little kerosene lantern at the warung, three or four men lounging on the bench and gossiping.
