You are correct, a taxi everyday would be too expensive. Driving a motorbike would be the best (even if you get rained on often. Just get a poncho).
I would guess that a Bimo from Ubud is probably Rp1,000 - 2,000.
In Tampaksiring, the only homestay I knew, Gusti Homestay, may still operates, but it was kind of a dump. It's near the main road.
My suggestions. 1) Find a temporary place in Ubud. In no time, you should be able to find a place with a family compound in/near Tampaksiring.
2) There is a young woman, American I believe, living in Tampaksiring. She is married to a Balinese. Her name is Sandie, and she runs The Village Children Association, Gunung Kawi. Her email is:

Actually, I would guess that, most likely, you are going to work at her school. If someone can help you with your problem, she is the one.
