You should have no difficulty arranging tours in Yogya. A very reasonable starting place is the Via-Via Cafe in Jalan Prawirotoman I. Prawirotoman is a kind of "tourist" area a few kilometres south of the city centre.
You don't need to hire a guide anywhere - it's an optional extra.
