Hi Suet,
first of all you need an Indonesian sponsor who can write a sponsorletter for you. You bring it together with the rest of your papers to the Indonesian Embassy in your country, maybee in Sydney or Canberra? It will if granted, be valid for 6 months. After the first 60 days you'll have to go to the Immigrasi in Bali and apply for an extension, then you'll have to go back ones a month until 6 months has passed (all together). After 6 months you'll have to leave Indonesia, go to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and start the process all over again at the Indonesian Embassy there I myself prefere Kuala Lumpur, they process the application in 3 days. When going to the Immigrai you'll have to do it atleast 7 days prior to that you'r permit will expire, it can be a reall trouble if you'r to late with your extensionapplication. It can be very confusing at the Kantor Immigrasi so always bring your sponsor.
Regarding renting a villa or house you can cheek on the web or advertise in the BALI ADVERTISER. Shouldn't be to difficult to get a place to rent.
