We had the problem in June, as did many others that we spoke to, that we were only able to receive sms but not send. It didn't make any difference which indonesian carrier was selected. Usually, as long as you have international roaming on your phone (not available with prepaid I believe, only plans) then you can text to and from aust - but don't make calls it is too expensive. BUT if problem as above, then its easy to buy a bali sim card and use it for text - and also cheap calls to local bali numbers.
