We were also first timers and arrived back last week. Found changing $100 NZD notes convenient, and just used the hotel which provided rates only marginally worse than the other money changers and banks. Also took some money out of an ATM - no problem. Used USD for the VOA at the airport. Overall, everything was much easier than expected - and we will be going back!
