If you clear customs, so does your baggage. You maybe able to keep the luggage at the airport in a locker of some description, but I don't know for sure.
If you are staying over in Sin, you are entering another country and therefore must do the customs thing for Sin. When you depart Sin you will do the custom thing for Aus.
I don't think you will have aproblem with DVD's as they are mainly concerned nowadays with drugs and terrorists.
