They are hardly limited to Kuta. Although I cannot present first hand experience, I can relate some stories and observations made by Tamu ladies I know that have had such first hand experience they shared with me.
"Gigolos" is the most often comparison given to them, but unlike gigolos in other western cultures, the over-ridding comment I hear about the "boys" here, is "sensitive." Never have I heard a word of abuse, violence or theft associated with these young guys, who, in the end, just want what the visitor wants...a good time. No doubt, there are the bad exceptions, but overall, this "system" seems to work in its own remarkable way.
A whole lot of single Japanese ladies like to travel to Bali, in search of love, but even more, they yearn for attention, kindness, and sensitivity. Romance, in Bali? Who could possibly think of it being any better? This influx of single women into Bali is not by any means limited to the Japanese, but it seems they are most identifiable and noticed. It seems, in one way or another, that Balinese men have as strong an appeal to the female Tamu, as Balinese women have in their own way.
Some think this whole issue is predatory in nature. I disagree. After all, how many flocks of lambs have you ever seen walk willfully into the lion's den? I see this more as a unique, "foreign exchange program" that more often than not leaves both parties involved better off from the experience. In a few words boils down to, "hey, you want to enjoy our women, fine, we'll enjoy yours too."
