Doing business like that in Indonesia is not the same as in Western countries. Take a look at the expat website - they have some useful info on doing business in Indonesia (link below)
One of the reasons many use a middleman is 1. he is likely to speak English and the manufacturer may not have an English speaking person. 2. you need someone to do stuff for you once you are home (like organise new orders because sales have been so good! etc)
Consequently TRUST is a big issue. You have to send the money before anyone ships the goods - and that is a bit scary.
Do some web searching too - there are a few companies that have internet sites for wholesale orders, usually in container or large lots.
Also, don't forget that Bali is not the only place that manufactures sarongs and handicrafts - be prepared to travel to Java to make sure you are getting the best deal.
