Hi Dave, I posted the following some time ago......

This is probably useless info for some people but....
If you buy a sim card in Bali to use for sms locally or back home
the rates are considerably cheaper and you can phone home if necessary, although best to sms your Bali number and get them to ring you.
PRO XL sim card at Matahari Dept store in Kuta cost 58,000rp and included 50,000rp free calls/sms. You can then top it up with 25, 50 or 100,000rp)
To check the available credits left dial *123# send and reply will come back to your phone showing amount left.
To call/sms Australia dial 001 61 418 123 345 (drop the first zero off the number ie 0418 123 345)
To send your new Bali sim card number tell your friends in Australia to dial 0011 62 81 7066 4123 (once again drop the first zero off the mobile number of 081 7066 4123)
Your sim card number does not last long (eg Sept03 - Mar04, no longer in use) and I think the credits expire after 3 months so wise to hand over the sim card to a Balinese friend as your leave Bali.
Hope this is useful information for someone travelling to Bali soon.
