As for the volcano, whilst it's active you don't look into a crater of lava like the ones in Hawaii. There are vents here and there that let you know it's alive and well. As for erupting I think they can guage it these days. Those Germans who were killed went to close to activity that was in progress. They weren't just caught short is my understanding. You get to see where lava has flowed and the blackened remains etc. Now you don't want to know anymore or it'll spoil it for you.
I'll go next time and recommend it highly as per the groups rave reviews. Just do it with people who know what they're doing as per my referral.
