way back in 1991 when i was a backpacker,i stayed in a cheap losman that had those old wooden safes behind reception . i left aud$1800.00 in it [silly me]that was alot of money back then there were no atms back then luckily i also had travelers checks.to cut a long storey short the money was stolen the hotel didn,t want to know about it the police were sympathetic and for a small admin fee gave me a police report.i phoned the insurance company while in bali[they were in hong kong]who told me to do what i had already done but did not offer any imediate financial asistance.on returning to australia i contacted my travel agent told them what hapened where i was given a claim form and told that it was nothing to do with them .after lodging it was rejected because the money was lost while :not on my person:ie cash left in hotel safes may not be covered but if your staying in higher class and more secure hotel security may be better.take somthing else as backup, either travelers checks ,credit card or a better insurance company than i had, read between the lines of your travel insurance and make sure you are covered for cash left in a hotel safe.
