they aren't too bad around legian at all. Melasti street still has them, but they don't cause a problem. Jln Legian in that area and Jln Padma and all those streets are fine. Towards Kuta the roadworks get much worse, but still caused no problems for us. We did walk everywhere though instead of taking a taxi.
