I've never had the experience of living there of 19 months, and can understand that it might be a long time in most any urban area.
But I also had gotten the impression that Yogya did have a strong 'ground level' support for the current Sultan (who is also the Governor). I was in the city thre of 4 years ago when the Central govt. (I think Habibi) had decided to name a new Governor-- and the local outpouring of support from the people-- from educated to becak men seemed pretty imprressive.
As far as the city for a Tourist destination, I think it's got a lot to offer and is definitely worth the time for a visit.
