Many of you will already know about these fixed price market shops, so this information is more for the "newbies".
KETUTS ART SHOP 14 (9)
Adys Lane, Jl Sahadewa, Legian Ph(0361) 763410
Home Ph/Fax:(0361) 483477
The 2 Ketut sisters run these 2 clothing stalls at the end of a small laneway just off Garlic Lane (Jl Sahadewa.)
From Melasti St, it's the first tiny Gang on your right.
From Padma, it's the last on your left.
It's at the rear end of a small group of stalls just opposite the Dolphin Restaurant.
It can be a little difficult to find, but it's well worth the effort.
The first thing she usually does, is give you a complimentary aqua, just what you need to cool you down whilst you browse in her shops.
Her prices range from 10,000 to 40,000rp (for the better quality stuff). She usually quotes at the bottom end of what it can take you 20 minutes to get elsewhere. If you happen to have bought cheaper elsewhere, just tell her, and she will usually match that price.
DIANNES SHOP: Kartika Plaza Street, Tuban Mob Ph: 0812 363 2336
Her stall is opposite the Green Gardens Restaurant/Hotel in Tuban.
I had previously read about Dianne on the BTF ( courtesy of Linda, Chelsey & co), but as we usually go to Ketut's,it wasn't until almost our last day, that I ventured over the road to her shop.
Hubby was looking for another pair of the brightly coloured Bali pants in size XL. Most of the markets only stock them in "One Size Fits All", but Ketut has them in the XL size which has a longer and wider leg. Having sold out of them, we thought that maybe Dianne would have some in stock.
Unfortunately she didn't,however she offered to make them up for hubby, and he had a choice of fabric colours and patterns to choose from. However, as she prefers 2-3 days to make them( her hubby does the sewing I believe), he could not order them as we were leaving the next day.Ketut charges 30,000rp for the XL size, so I expect Dianne would match that too.
Another friend has had women's casual bali style dresses made to order as well.
We were happy to make the acquaintence of this lovely lady, and will definitely buy from her next trip. She knows about the BTF & recommendation for her as well.
TOOTSIES: Shop No 28, Sindu Beach Market, Sanur
Ph (0361) 285 184 Mobile" 081 239 5071
The directions below are from a 2001 posting, so hope they are still current!
"To avoid some of the hawkers on the beach, you can cut through the Natour Hotel ( since renamed I think). If you are arriving by taxi, catch one to the hotel, then walk through the garden and out through their beach restaurant. Turn right, and about another 50 yards or so you will see the Sindhu Beach Market sign. Turn into the market away from the beach and you will find Tootsies on the right hand side about 2/3rds of the way into the market."
It's been a couple of years since I ventured over to Sanur, but we did a lot of our shopping at Tootsies back in 2002.
Her prices were excellent, and I believe that the Jenny Shop next to hers, also sells at a fixed price.
I have also read that she is now selling DVD's as well.
The Little Shop outside Kartika Supermarket:-
has fixed price on everything it sells like cigarette lighters, sunglasses, bags, souvenirs etc. However, it is the watch prices that are the best.
All ladies watches are 25,000 - 30,000rp and mens start at 40,000rp. Last year my hubby bought a "super duper" Addidas and a waterproof Rolex for 75,000rp each, the same ones that Michael on the beach would not drop below 150,000rp for. This year he bought a TAG HEUER for 40,000rp.
SITA FASHION - BAG & POTTERY SHOP:
373 Jl Legian, Kuta - on the left just past where Melasti bisects Legian. Ph (0361) 763 156 Fax: 62 - 0361 - 751686
This is an amazing shop which I return to every year. The pottery prices are unbelievable, and they will crate the larger urns etc for shipment, as well as carefully packing smaller, breakable items.
The pottery plaques, platters etc equate to around $A6 upwards, and this time I bought a few wrought iron candle holders in various colours and designs for 19,500 - 24,500rp.
Some of their most beautiful urns have banana leaf incorporated in the design, but the shop assistants will warn you about the customs problems if you are from Oz.
I also bought a black & white "grafitti" Louis Vuitton bag from their bag section for 90,000rp.The same bag was on display at the Kartika Plaza shop for 180,000rp, but I didn't price it at Top Ten.
BAGUS WATCHES - outside the Matahari Dept Store in Kuta Square.About 4 stalls in all think.
Ph: (0361) 734 106 or Mob: 081 239 92094
I am including these stalls as well, as whilst not strictly fixed price, I found that when asked the watch price for ladies Gucci/LV etc, they immediately replied 30,000rp. Most times I also received an extra battery when I asked for it. They also write a receipt for your purchase.
I know that sometimes you can buy these same watches for 25,000rp after some hard bargaining, but I felt that 30,000rp ($A4.60) was fine, especially with the currect exchange rate.
