I was in SEA for three months just this spring and logged many, many dives. Not only was the diving off Gili Trawangan the best I saw in Indonesia (which included several days in Amed), it was the best in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. During this trip I dived all the top-rated sites but am certainly open to the possibility that some wonderful lesser known sites slipped by me.
The problem is that the once great sites off Bali, Manado, etc. have been dynamite-fished and cyanide-fished into oblivion. In the Gilis they have armed soldiers lodged on Gili air 24-7 who patrol by boat to protect the reef.
