There are many small car hire places to be found in the Kuta/Legian area, all eager to barter if they have cars in stock and not out there earning for them. Watch for the places with a few cars parked about with "Rent Me" placards. The best advice is to look around and make many inquiries. Suzuki Jimnys are the basic car (good for two, but a tight fit for 3 particularly if you have dive or surf gear or a lot of luggage). I have rented reliable Suzukis for a week all inclusive of insurance and mileage for a US$100 banknote. No a/c, but with a radio/cassette for this price. Condsider that around US$15 per day for a basic car on a weekly basis is a good deal. Try the small agency just outside the entrance to the Three Brothers Inn in Legian. Negotiate their best rupiah price first and then try round it down to the next lowest US or Aussie $ equivalent.
