Going on holiday with TWO girlfriends - Some guys have all the luck!
At the end of the day it is your health not an annonymous person on the internet unqualified to give health advice. The likleyhood of you encountering the malaria parasite is lower in touristy areas such as Kuta in more rural areas - EVEN OF BALI the chances dramatically increase.
As there is no Malaria Vaccine on the market (and wont be fo a good 10 years) a number of pharmacological companies produce drugs which are essentially identical yet produced under different brand names- this is why it may appear that you and your friends have been given different advice. there are two main types for SE Asia If you have a look at the packaging it will prob say on all of them Chloroquinne and Proguanil. If you are American it is maybe a bit more likley that you would be prescribed Larium (Methloquinne) if you use a search engine you will get hundreds of websites informing you of the dangerous side effects but to memory, only about 1 in 10,000 suffer SERIOUS side effects (and they are serious)
Like I say, Its your health, you decide, but do your own reseach and make an informed decision.
