Darwin is a great place to live in ... not so great to visit.
If you've got 12 hours, I'd suggest you go fish-feeding.
When you arrive, grab a copy of the NT News (Prop. R. Murdoch)
and check out high tide time. An hour before high tide, go to
the fish-feeding spot (hell, I forget the name)round the back of
the YMCA just before the Stuart Highway hits the sea. It's great
fun, especially for kids. Fish (mainly milk fish - 3-4ft long)
swim in to be hand-fed. It's also worth checking out the NT Museum,
at the south end of Mindil Beach. Watch the sun set at Fannie Bay.
Fannie Bay shops are good for pizza/ice cream etc. For the best
steak in the NT, go to the Parap Hotel, just off Ross Smith Ave.
Public transport is crap in Darwin. Taxis are expensive and hard to find. Strongly advise you hire a car for the day. Have a
great time.
ps. DON'T swim in the sea. There's a lagoon north of Fannie Bay
which is apparently OK.
