I'm a first timer too (with 3 more days to go) so you may want to stop reading now... but it seems from other posts that the water is plenty warm enough. As a frequent and widely travelled snorkeler, one thing I can tell you to watch out for is sun exposure on your back, neck and the backs of your knees. A common mistake is to underestimate this exposure (ouch). Wearing a tee shirt helps.
Seems the best snorkelling is out on Nusa Lembongan and on the north shore (Amed, Tulamben, Permuteran, etc.)
