In many areas I think you are correct.....
The issue is that government and corporate debt is generally in US dollars, therefore when the currency falls, infrastructure and human spending falls away because more money must flow out to meet repayments. Thus, living standards fall (or fail to improve).
Imports become more expensive, fuel would be a good example.
