Just arrived back yesterday from our first trip to Bali 7 nights (it was great), (much interesting info from the forum some very misleading though). I had a sports coat made by TOP JAS Kartika Plaza St, SAMUDRA LANE NO. 4 (KUTA)
50% wool 50% cotton, fully lined 2 inside pockets for $70 AUD. It took one day to make and I (we) were so impressed with quality I had a pair of shorts made($18) and wife Fully lined skirt($20) which fitted her like a glove, and we all know this is the TRUE test of satisfaction!!. (again done in one day). As we like warm clothes you may like to think about taking over enough of your own material to make the winter items you want as the materials dont generally have labels and %contents on them and are probably aimed at clients living in a warmer climate. The feel can often reveal a lot about it though.
A word of warning
-any tailor will want a deposit to purchase the material so make sure you get a reciept and this is not an unreasonable request.
-the number of the shop often has nothing to do with the location(if you like the number put it on you shop, perhaps it will be lucky?) so a first time visitor like me might get a little confused seeing shop no. 6 next to shop no.98 followed by no.27.
In this shop I was dealing with the tailor and was measured by the tailor who made my coat not an agent or "my brother", (at my wife's insistance) I have to admit she was right.
-don't expect to walk into anything like Dixon's in Adelaide!!!
-offer to pay in RP rather than $AUD as the locals can often not get as good a rate as we can for the $AUD which suprised me.
I hope I have put enough info here to convince you that this is genuine info and if not I am sure you will find any number of excellent tailors very keen to get your business. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your holiday, we did!!
If you are still interested in the tailor I used you will find him(them) on the first lane leading towards the beach (SAMUNDRA) South of the RAMADA BINTANG BALI hotel near to the beach end of that lane(though it does not exit to the beach). Just call a blue taxi (no cost from the hotel) insist on the meter and it will probably cost you less than $1AU to get there. Pay them when you arrive as you can always get another one and we found that the meter jumps if you get them to wait. More about that in a later report it's bloody cold here right now and I am realy feeling it after a week in Bali.
The comments and jealous looks I got at work today were just an added and unexpected bonus!!!!!!!!
Let me kow how you got on????
